Hyper Realism/Nano Brows

2023 has seen Instagram blow up with photos and videos about Hyper Realism/Ultra Realism/Nano Brows! So what are they and why are they dominating the brow space and are they here to stay?

As a Permanent Make Up Artist and Micropigmentation Specialist I am always keeping an eye out for new trends especially if the are here to stay. It is also important for me to make sure my skills are honed by continuing to regularly become able to offer new techniques.

So what are Hyper Realism/Nano Brows?

  • Hyper Realism/Nano brows are a form of cosmetic tattoo that mimics the look of hair strokes to create hyper-realistic eyebrows.
  • To create Hyper Realism/Nano strokes, a handheld machine is used. This is different from microblading which is done using a manual handheld tool to create hair strokes.
  • Hyper Realism/ Nano brows combine two different techniques to create the hyper realistic hair stroke:
    • Pixelated Hair Strokes – grazing the skin to create soft or bold lines.
    • Defined Hair Strokes – penetrating the skin to create distinct lines.
  • Hyper Realism/Nano brows are a great alternative to microblading for:
    • Clients who are sensitive to pain (this will be more comfortable for them than microblading).
    • Clients who are willing to get regular touch-ups (this will fade quicker than microblading).
    • Clients who want a less permanent result (microblading will last longer in the skin than Hyper Realism/Nano brows).

Which Clients Are suitable for hyper realism/nano brows

Suitable:

  • Clients with ‘normal’ aka combination skin i.e. not too dry or too oily, not easily aggravated or sensitive, with no chronic conditions such as acne or rosacea.
  • Client’s with small pores, specifically in the T-Zone area of the face.
  • Clients with no previous Permanent Makeup (PMU) who want a natural-looking hair stroke effect.

Not Suitable:

  • Clients prone to eczema, psoriasis, keratosis pilaris, and dermatitis (i.e. skin is constantly flaking, itching, or aggravated). In this case, their skin will not hold the pigment well and is not suitable for tattooing.
  • Conditions like chronic acne and rosacea. The inherent nature of this type of skin causes easy bleeding, which once again means the skin will not retain the pigment very well. Also, the colour tends to heal very cool/ashy. Frequent touch-ups (every 6 months) is recommended to maintain colour on this skin type.
  • If a client has large pores, specifically in the eyebrow region and forehead (aka the T-Zone), the colour will fade faster and the retention will not be as great compared to someone with smaller pores and dry skin.
  • People with previous eyebrow tattoos may want to change or fix what they already have. Laser removal prior to the procedure is recommended if the colour is still too dark or if they want to change the shape. In general, hyper realism/nano brows are not ideal for clients with an existing tattoo.

Hyper Realism/Nano brows is a fast-growing technique due to the hyper-realistic effect of tiny hair strokes created with a handheld machine, quickly becoming a client favourite. An alternative to microblading, but with minimal skin trauma and faster fading, leaving you with the most natural-looking hair-strokes.
